When it comes to being the most popular star in the world, Shah Rukh Khan’s fans know why he is considered the same, and the love he gets from all over reinforces the same. But, did you know that another study in 2007 said this 3.2 billion the whole world knows SRK compared to 2.7 billion who knew about Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise?
2023 will be remembered as the year Shah maximized his potential to become the star he has been delivering time and time again. 1000 million + grossers are Pathaan, Jawan (& maybe also Dunki). With Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 not being what it should have been, this looks like the year Shah ruled, and everyone witnessed it.
But, do you know that there was a time when SRK & Tom Cruise released films together at the box office, which ended with results that shocked the world? Even though Shah is known to many people around the world, Tom still made more money than him, which made SRK go, “So, we are failing.”
Back in 2007, on 9th November, Tom Cruise’s Lions For Lambs, also starring Meryl Streep and Andrew Garfield, was released worldwide alongside Shah Rukh Khan & Deepika Padukone’s Om Shanti Om. The Hollywood war drama was directed by Robert Redford, the ‘son of sundance’ from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, while OSO was the son of Farah Khan.
Lions For Lambs was produced at a high price of $35 millionand gathered a little $10 million at the end of the first week from the forty-five markets that released it around the world. On the other hand, Shah Rukh Khan’s Om Shanti Om shocked the world with its collections $19 million in its opening weekend, nearly double that of the Tom Cruise-starrer war drama.
Also, when all this happened, another ‘Desi’ star rose above it all, and benefited 150 million, bringing the highest figures of any Indian film. The star was Rajinikanth and the film was Sivaji: The Boss.
With Pathaan and Jawan bringing in huge numbers overseas, we now know that the seeds of Shah Rukh Khan becoming a ‘global star’ have been sown for years.
Note: Box office numbers are based on estimates from various sources. The numbers have not been independently verified by Koimoi.
