The 2024 Passat is available with at least seven powertrain options, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. The latter combines a 1.5-liter petrol engine with a 19.7-kWh battery and an electric motor. This hybrid can travel 62 miles on all-electric power before the gasoline engine kicks in and like other PHEVs, it can be charged overnight from a household electrical outlet. A 48-volt mild hybrid assist configuration is also available – a first for the Passat – which Volkswagen calls eTSI.
In the fuel department, there are conventional petrol engines, the choice of which is confirmed if the buyer chooses the usual VW transmission, called 4Motion. Both 2.0-liter displacements, the engines’ horsepower is 201 for front-wheel drive and 261 for 4Motion models.
Buyers looking for a diesel engine are also spoiled for choice, with three different 2.0-litre TDI models available. Available outputs are 121 horsepower or 148 horsepower for front-wheel drive and 190 horsepower for all-wheel drive. All internal combustion engines are mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
