The Kansas City Chiefs have emerged as a potential candidate for veteran free agent pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul following new rumors about his availability.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport posted the news that sparked the discussion for KC.
“Free-agent pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul, one of the top rushers still available, is now ready to sign with the practice squad of a playoff contender, according to sources,” Rapoport said Nov. 8. “He started 13 games for them.” [Baltimore] Ravens last year.”
Arrowhead Pride senior analyst Ron Kopp Jr. was one of the first to point to the Chiefs as a possible win-win destination, saying, “If Frank [Clark] didn’t want that [practice squad] spot…” – in a quoted post.
And he wasn’t the only one to come to that conclusion on November 8th.

Shortly after the Rapoport update, Clutch Points writer Max Escarpio outlined some potential landing spots that make sense for Pierre-Paul and his next suitor.
“There are some rival teams that are probably eyeing the potential signing of Pierre-Paul,” Escarpio noted. “Teams in need of more depth at the pass rusher positions include the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars.”
“The Bills and Chiefs appear to be the best options for both parties,” he later added, also adding the Dallas Cowboys.
“With the Bills already having one of those former Super Bowl champions in Von Miller, the Chiefs are the perfect option to bring Pierre-Paul to the practice squad and see if he has a chance to make an impact this postseason.” , the NFL author concluded.
At the very least, this is something to consider for Kansas City. They seemed interested in Clark getting a practice squad contract, as Kopp pointed out. So why not another postseason contributor like Pierre-Paul?
The former All-Pro is a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At age 34, he is nearing 100 career sacks, with 94.5 in 13 regular seasons and another 3.5 in the playoffs.
With the Ravens in 2022, Pierre-Paul was still impressive with 3.0 sacks, 26 total tackles (five for a loss), five pass defenses and one interception. He added another half-sack and a tackle during Baltimore’s only playoff game last winter.
Jason Pierre-Paul wants to break 100 career spots and believes he can help as a pass rusher and mentor
During an exclusive interview with The Pivot Podcast on October 10, Pierre-Paul spoke candidly about returning to the NFL in 2023.
“I’m trying to get to 100 sacks,” the veteran playmaker admitted. “That’s a goal I want and I haven’t been given the opportunity.”
“The transition is easy for me,” explains Pierre-Paul. “So when I get the call or when I get the call, it’s like: OK, football wants me, they want my talent to show that [younger] Individuals how to do it.”
The long-time edge defender also said on the podcast that “guys aren’t tackling like they used to” and “guys aren’t running like they used to,” pointing out that he’s a prospect or can teach other techniques while pushing for 100 sacks.
“What the vets know you just have to teach these children [and] Hopefully they understand and understand it,” repeated Pierre-Paul.
The Chiefs have several younger pass rushers who could benefit from Pierre-Paul’s knowledge of the game. 2023 first-rounder Felix Anudike-Uzomah and 2023 fifth-rounder BJ Thompson stand out, but George Karlaftis and Malik Herring are still learning, among others.
Clark helped Karlaftis tremendously in 2022, so this concept wasn’t lost on the KC coaching staff.
“I’ve been through too much for anyone to tell me what I can’t do,” Pierre-Paul expressed the thought on October 10th. “So I reach for these 100 bags. [And] Hopefully I’ll be a Hall of Famer one day.”
Wouldn’t it be nice for “JPP” to retire to the top of the league, reach 100 career sacks, and add the third Super Bowl ring of his career with another franchise?
