Brendan Fraser slams Golden Globes (Image credit: Wikipedia, Golden Globes)

Actor Brendan Fraser joined Howard Stern’s talk show and continued to appear at the Golden Globes, which he did not attend this year, despite being nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Motion for his performance in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale.

Austin Butler won the category for “Elvis”. Fraser has accused Philip Berk, former president and member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, of groping him at a luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 2003. Fraser revealed the alleged attack in a 2018 GQ interview. Berk later denied Fraser’s claims.

During his interview with Howard Stern, Brendan Fraser said that the Butler’s Globes win for “Elvis” was “well deserved” and a “great win for him”. He added that he has no interest in winning the award himself. “I was wondering if that was a cynical nomination,” Fraser said. “I couldn’t really tell because of my history with them and because I haven’t seen the results of their reformation. We’re all still waiting to tell the truth. What matters is that it wouldn’t mean a thing to me? I do not want it. I didn’t ask to be considered at all, that was presumed.”

Speaking further about it, Brendan Fraser continued: “They needed me, I didn’t need them. Because it wouldn’t make sense to me. Where should I put the hood ornament? What would I do with that?” When asked if he thought other actors should have joined him in not going to the Globes, Fraser replied, “It’s my fight, nobody else’s. I don’t need everyone who is in solidarity with me. Perhaps. But you know, it would be a leap of faith in whoever that would be. It would be a calculated risk and it could very easily be downplayed by the cynical way of looking at it all.”

“Honestly, I don’t want to think about it that much because it’s not that important to me,” Fraser continued of the Golden Globes. “And the good news is that they did something important in this show and it changed my opinion of them: they put Zelenskyy in the spotlight. They let him take the stage and that’s a strong statement that I can endorse and support.”

Brendan Fraser confirmed to GQ magazine in November that he would be skipping the Globes, saying at the time: “No, I won’t be attending. It’s because of the history I have with them. And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me many things, but not like that.”

Fraser is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Whale.
